Maths

At Teignmouth Primary school, we believe in the importance of mathematics for our children’s achievement in later life. We seek to develop an enthusiasm and deep understanding of the subject so that children become lifelong mathematicians. Our school Values of Respect, Responsibility and Aspiration support children in becoming focused and confident mathematicians.

Mathematics is taught at the school using key principles of Teaching for Mastery, and focuses on three main aims:

  • Varied Fluency
  • Reasoning
  • Problem Solving

The school utilizes the scheme of learning from the White Rose Hub to aid in sequencing and planning the teaching of mathematics. This aids teachers in the broader placement of key concepts, as well as considering the small steps needed to break down or consolidate learning for each lesson.

We believe in children gaining a strong understanding of fluency and arithmetic. For this reason, daily arithmetic and Fluency Bee are built into every maths lesson to develop children’s confidence in these areas.  In addition to this, we seek to develop a deep understanding of number through ensuring children have exposure to a range of concrete, pictorial and abstract representations.

Our calculation policy draws upon these representations, and provides a consistent and progressive approach from EYFS to Year 6.

Children develop their mastery of mathematics by utilizing concepts in a range of different contexts and by solving more complex problems. We use organic curriculum links (when relevant) in order to develop children’s broader understanding of mathematics in different areas.

All children deserve to succeed – we ensure this happens with pre and post teach interventions and further support to help children who are at risk of falling behind. For those children who grasp concepts quickly, we provide opportunities for deepening understanding as opposed to embarking on new learning.

As a school, we are constantly seeking to develop our practice and be the best we can be. Regular CPD, monitoring of the subject, and moderation ensures we continue to develop mathematics at Teignmouth Primary.
