About Reception

At Teignmouth Primary, we recognise that every child is unique, bringing their own experiences, strengths and interests. From the very beginning, we focus on understanding each child’s starting point so we can support and build on their individual learning journey. We value curiosity, resilience and a willingness to try, creating a classroom where children feel confident and safe to explore new opportunities and learning experiences.

We provide a nurturing, well-planned environment where play, movement, connection and curiosity form the foundation of learning. We prioritise play as the most effective way for children to develop key skills over time, supported by a carefully structured curriculum, based on Development Matters, that ensures consistency across prime areas, early literacy and mathematics.

Through a balance of adult-led and child-initiated learning, we encourage independence, creativity and exploration in a safe and supportive setting. This approach not only prepares children for future academic success but also fosters a lifelong love of learning.

The characteristics of effective learning underpin all that we do, shaping our environments and teaching. Communication and language are central, helping children build confidence, resilience, social skills and collaboration.

With high expectations for all, we ensure every child makes strong progress at Teignmouth Primary School, guided by our school values of responsibility, respect and aspiration.
