In science, we have been learning about microorganisms: how they are classified, how they can be helpful and how they can be harmful to us.
One investigation we did was to see which conditions were preferable for yeast (a type of fungi). We added yeast and sugar to hot water, warm water and cold water. We put each mixture into a bottle with a balloon on top. As yeast feeds on sugar, it releases carbon dioxide, a gas that spreads to fill the area it is in and therefore, blowing up the balloon on top of the bottle. We noticed that the balloons on the warm water bottle blew up much more than on the others allowing us to conclude that yeast prefers a warm environment.
